RWSD Continues to Receive Recognition

Roxborough Water and Sanitation District (RWSD or District) continues to receive recognition for the state-of-the-art technology and innovative approach to water treatment plant operations at its Larry D. Moore Water Treatment Plant.

In the summer of 2017, RWSD began operations at the new water treatment plant, which replaced its old facility constructed in 1958.  The new treatment plant included the ACTIFLO high-rate water clarification process that has the ability to remove over 99% of the naturally occurring contaminants in our raw water supply and allowed RWSD to save an estimated 30% on the cost of the new treatment plant.  The new water treatment plant also has the distinction of being the first drinking water facility in Colorado to receive 100% of its primary disinfection credits using ultraviolet light (UV), which reduced the use of chemicals and the potential for formation of disinfection byproducts.

The new water treatment plant received a Top Project design award from Water and Waste Digest in 2018, and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Colorado’s Engineering Excellence Award program awarded the facility its Excellence Award in 2019.

In late 2018, RWSD made the decision to implement Veolia’s AQUAVISTA platform for cloud-based operations support of the water treatment plant, the pump stations throughout the distribution system, and eventually the wastewater lift stations.  AQUAVISTA allows RWSD’s operations staff to use key performance indicators to monitor the treatment process in real time, and over time to develop operations dashboards to compare process trends and anticipate and respond to seasonal changes in raw water.  It also automates maintenance tracking and provides on-line access to O&M manuals and maintenance reports and can generate customizable reports. AQUAVISTA also gives the Operations team access to Veolia’s process engineers’ expertise that provides regular operations reviews and recommendations.

RWSD’s operations were recently highlighted in the August 12, 2020 edition of Water & Wastes Digest.  To see the article follow this link: https://www.wwdmag.com/channel/casestudies/state-art-water-treatment-management-cloud
